▶ガンジーの言葉

 マハトマ・ガンジーは1869年10月2日生まれ。インドは長い間、イギリスの植民地でした。ガンジーはチャルカ（糸車）を通してインドの独立を訴えまし た。国民一人一人が糸を紡ぎ、布にして生活の糧にする。そうした精神的・経済的自立なくして、インドの独立はあり得ないと考えました。ガンジーは「非暴 力・不服従」の独立運動でインド独立の父と呼ばれるようになりました。ガンジーは1948年1月30日に暗殺されましたが、その平和に対する考え方は、今 でも世界中の人たちに受け継がれています。その中から、ほんの一部ですが彼が語った言葉をご紹介します。（2015.04.19）

A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.
（人間は思考の産物だ。その人が考えている通りの人間になる。）

Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
（もし、過ちを犯す自由がないならば自由を手に入れた価値はない。）

An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind.
（「目には目を」という考え方では、世界中の目をつぶしてしまうことになる。）

Honest differences are often a healthy sign of progress.
（率直にいろいろな意見がでる時は、健全に進歩している兆候である。）

To believe in something and not to live it is dishonest.
（なにかを信じておきながら、そのように生きないことは不誠実というものだ。）

The future depends on what we do in the present.
（未来がどうなるかは、あなたが今なにをするかにかかっている。）

There is no path to peace. Peace is the path.
（平和への道はない。平和こそが道なのだ。）

Find purpose, the means will follow.
（目的が見つかれば、やり方はすぐに見つかるものだ。）

Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.
（強さは体力ではなく、不屈の精神から生まれるものだ。）

Hate the sin, love the sinner.
（罪を憎み、罪人を愛せよ。）

You should be the change you want to see in the world.
（この世界中が望む変化に、あなた自身がなってみなさい。）

In matters of conscience, the law of the majority has no place.
（良心の問題に関しては、 多数決の法則は適用できない。）

There is more to life than increasing its speed.
（人生は、速く片付けるだけが能ではない。）

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.
（明日死ぬつもりで生きなさい、永遠に生きるつもりで学びなさい。）

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.
（弱い者は相手を許すことができない。相手を許せるのは、強さの証だ。）

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.
（幸福とは、あなたが考えることと、あなたが言うことと、あなたがすること、の調和が取れている状態のことだ。）

Man lives freely only by his readiness to die.
（死の準備ができていれば自由に生きられる。）

It is unwise to be too sure of one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.
（自分の知恵を信頼しすぎるのは賢明ではない。一番強い者も弱り、一番賢い者も誤るということを、覚えておくことが健全である。）

A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.
（臆病なものは愛を表明することができない。愛を率直に表明できるものが勇者だ。）

Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.
（非暴力は人類に残された最大の力である。それは、人間が発明した最大の破壊兵器よりもさらに強力である。）

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.
（敵は最初は、あなたを無視する。つぎに、あざ笑い、それから、最後はあなたに戦いをいどんでくる。そうなったら、あなたの勝ちだ。）

You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.
（人間性への信頼を失ってはならない。人間性とは大海のようなものである。ほんの少し汚れても、海全体が汚れることはない。）

I am prepared to die, but there is no cause for which I am prepared to kill.
（私は、いつでも死ぬ覚悟はできている。しかし、私に人を殺す覚悟をさせる大義はどこにもない。）

An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it.Truth stands, even if there be no public support.It is self sustained.
（広く知られていることだからと言って間違いは真実にはならないし、誰もそうだと思わないからといって、真実が間違いにもならない。たとえ大衆の支持が無 くとも、真実は消え去ることはない。）

Be the change you wish to see in other people.
（他人が変わることを望むなら、あなた自身が変わりなさい。）

Each one has to find his peace from within. And peace to be real must be unaffected by outside circumstances.
（お互いの内部にある平和を見つけるべきだ。外から押し付けるものではない。）

Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.
（たとえ、あなたが少数派であろうとも、真実は真実なのだ。）

God has no religion.
（神は宗教を持たない。）

I can combine the greatest love with the greatest opposition to wrong.
（私は絶大な愛を、間違ったことへの大きな反抗と結びつけることができる。）

I have nothing to teach the world.Truth and nonviolence are as old as the hills.
（私には世界に教えられることなど何もない。真実や非暴力は、あの丘ができたのと同じくらい昔からすでに存在している。）

It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.
（本当の富とは健康のことであり、金や銀のことではない。）

Live simply that other may simply live.
（他の人がシンプルに生きられるように、自分がシンプルに生きろ。）

Mental violence has no potency and injures only the person whose thoughts are violent.
（精神的な暴力に効能はない。暴力を容認する考えを持っている人を傷つけるだけである。）

Never make a promise in haste.
（決してあわてて約束をするな。）

Non-violence is the first article of my faith. It is also the last article of my creed.
（非暴力は私の信念の第一章であり最終章でもある。）

Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment, full effort is full victory.
（満足感は努力のプロセスの中にあり、結果にあるのではない。努力すること自体が成功することなのだ。）

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
（国の偉大さや道徳的発展は、その国における動物の扱い方を見れば判る。）

There would be nothing to frighten you if you refused to be afraid.
（もし、あなたが恐怖から逃げなければ、あなたを怖がらせるものなど何もない。）

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty and democracy?
（全体主義や自由、民主主義などの神聖な名前でなされても、死人をつくり、孤児をつくり、ホームレスをつくることが、狂った破壊とどんな違いがあるだろう か。）

Whenever you are confronted with an opponent, conquer him with love.
（敵と直面したときは、愛で包み込みなさい。）

You can't shake hands with a clenched fist.
（にぎりこぶしと握手することはできない。）

If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.
（「自分はできる」と確信を持てば、自分がもっていなかった能力を手に入れることができる。）

Freedom from all attachment is the realization of God as Truth.
（あらゆる執着からの自由とは、神を真理として現実化させることである。）

Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed.
（地球は、すべての人が必要なものを供給できるが、彼らの欲を満たしきることはできない。）

Whether humanity will consciously follow the law of love, I do not know. But that need not disturb me. The law will work just as the law of gravitation works, whether we accept it or not. The person who discovered the law of love was a far greater scientist than any of our modern scientists. Only our explorations have not gone far enough and so it is not possible for everyone to see all its workings.
（人類が絶えず愛の法則に従ってきたかどうか私は知らないし興味もない。私たちが認めるかどうかに関わりなく、愛の法則はちょうど重力の法則のように働 く。愛の法則に気がついた人は今日のどんな科学者よりもはるかに偉大な学者だ。私たちの探求がそこまで十分に達していないから、誰も愛の法則が働いている ことを理解できないだけだ。）

All my actions have their rise in my inalienable love of mankind.

Almost anything you do will be insignificant, but you must do it.We do these things not to change the world, but so that the world will not change us.
（あなたがすることのほとんどは無意味であるが、それでもしなくてはならない。そうしたことをするのは、世界を変えるためではなく、世界によって自分が変 えられないようにするためである。）
